Embracing the Mantle of Leadership

Our Year 6 Student Leaders formally accepted their roles in an official ceremony held in East Commons.

Parents, guardians, and grandparents joined us to mark the beginning of their leadership journey, with Principal, Ms Linda Douglas, emphasising Wenona’s commitment to developing Renaissance Women; students engaged across intellectual, creative, and physical pursuits, who are dedicated to compassionate service and global citizenship.

"We are committed to egalitarian leadership," Ms Douglas said, "raising generations of young women who willingly contribute to ensuring a better world by standing up, speaking out, and taking on the mantle of leadership with grace and humility."

The ceremony saw the commissioning of Global Captains, who pledged to foster a culture of curiosity, excellence, fun, creativity, resilience, and teamwork. House Captains were charged with building positive relationships and creating spaces where every student feels "respected, loved, and known by their peers."

The Junior School Prefects committed to a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including acting as servant leaders, supporting their fellow students, and upholding Wenona's Values of Courage, Strength, Grace, Wisdom, and Kindness. "To act in such a way that every girl at Wenona may not only respect you, but see you as approachable, fair, kind, and empathic," was among their pledges.

The ceremony culminated movingly, as every Year 6 student stood to collectively accept their roles as Junior School leaders. They promised to support their elected peers, serve as role models to younger students, and embrace the 'step up' moments that would allow them to demonstrate their leadership.

The occasion was enhanced by musical performances, including Isabella’s violin rendition of Songs My Mother Taught Me by Antonin DvoÅ™ák, accompanied on the piano by Ms Josephine Allan.

This formal recognition of our youngest leaders complemented the spirit of curiosity and courage being cultivated in Kindergarten, demonstrating how these essential qualities manifest throughout a Wenona education − from a child's first wonderings about reading to a Year 6 student's first steps into formal leadership.
